Decluttering -- Start with the Duplicates!

How many whisks are in your kitchen? �� Is your linen closet overflowing with old sheet sets? ��️ If you’re thinking about downsizing, here’s a simple tip to get started: tackle the duplicates!

Go through every drawer, cupboard, and closet, and pull out items you have more than one of—china sets, tablecloths, seasonal décor, even bottle openers. Choose your favorite and let go of the rest. It’s an easy way to lighten the load and make future moves smoother.

Making Downsizing a Bit Easier

Downsizing and decluttering can offer seniors a simpler, more secure and lower-stress lifestyle.

Here are 12 tips:

Start early. Starting the process 2-3 months in advance can be helpful.
Make a plan. By making a plan you will reduce anxiety and make the process more manageable.
Set a timeline. The plan should include a timeline, making sure things are done in order for a smooth transition.
Use the new floor plan. Having a floor plan of your new home will help determine what pieces will fit.
Take pictures. Photos of how things are arranged may help in arranging your new home.
Plan for problems. Think early about which possessions or area of your current home might present challenges in your new home.
Start with "less". Think less used, less valuable, less emotional. This may help you decide what to take to your new home.
Discard duplicates. Most duplicates can be discarded.
Use a "one year" rule. If it hasn't been used or viewed within the past year, you may consider not taking it.
Create "yes" or "no" groups. This can help by clearly defining what to take and what not to take to your new home.
Donate or discard. Once the items are divided into yes and no groups, you can determine what can be donations and what needs to be disposed of in other ways.
Get help from family. Family can offer both helping hands and suggestions in which items from your current home should be moved and which items should not be moved to your new home.
